Often people say that they can never meditate because their mind never quiets down. In a beginning class, when asked if anyone had any thoughts while meditating, every hand goes up.
Then the question: Who or what is there inside us that knows we’re thinking? What’s going on? Has there been failure on everyone’s part? No, it is actually the “noble failure.” The awareness of our thoughts is the gold of the practice!!
At our very first attempt to meditate, we get in touch with the witness inside. Some part of us is aware of exactly what is going on. And this awareness does not make judgments, comments or decisions. This natural awareness will be the key to all the insights and happiness that will follow from our practice of meditation.
